To see a Sandhill Crane up close can be a real spectacle. In 2023 I moved to a farm in central British Columbia and come Spring, was introduced to the family (?) of cranes that seemed to call the back field home. One day it sounded like a pterodactyl was outside. From the deck stairs I could see five cranes hopping around, opening their large wings and sounding off their crane call. They’re big, beautiful birds. It was always something special to see them flying by or taking off from the field. So when I knew I’d be moving, I wanted to have a label designed that remembered this specific place.
The first design I had in mind was a crane and the name of a lake nearby. But while talking with my graphic designer I changed my mind and thought of this lyric written on a post it note in my studio.
Moving made me think of space. The change in physical space, the space created after making a decision, the space between before and after.
It wasn’t until the final proof was signed off on that I realized the other interior label I sew into garments was also about space.
Totally unintentional and a very happy coincidence. The empty space label was made maybe 10 years ago? When it clicked that both labels shared the same subject matter I was pumped, I try to always take note of something serendipitous.
On a personal level, I read each as being from different points in my life and work. Empty space has some sadness to it, a longing, like saying “ I miss you”. Again, it was something I’d written down on a note. Making friends has an openness, a welcoming to the newness around space.
I like the positivity of this new label. Perhaps it’s speaking about having more space for yourself or what it feels like to be on your own in a new way. Having physical space or not feeling the need to fill a space. Making friends, accepting, enjoying. Whichever way you interpret it I hope it is a nice surprise for you inside our garments.
